John Rizzo is the GMP Project Officer at The Scripps Research Institute’s Consortium for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Development.


With over 20 years of developing processes for use in clinical trials and obtaining expertise throughout the development cycle of small molecules, mAbs and vaccines, John Rizzo joined The Scripps Research Institute in 2018 as the project manager of the CHAVI-ID team.

Research Interests

As the liaison between research PIs and external CMO operations, and acting as the CMC development subject matter expert, John Rizzo developed and implemented strategic operational plans for the initial development of lead candidates. He continued to apply this experience as a CHAVD CMC Program Manager, supporting Technical Operations projects covering multiple functional areas, including, but not limited to, Process Development, Analytical Development and Control, Technology Transfer, Quality Assurance, CMC Support of Regulatory Filings, and CMC Alliance Management.

John Rizzo is focused on coordinating internal research and external manufacturing activities to align with strategic goals of the leadership team, and managing its execution in conjunction with the GMP Manufacturing Unit of the CHAVD to support phase I clinical trials through the HIV Vaccine Trials Network.
